The Way Forward

BUSINESS PLAN FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT, UP-SCALING AND COMMERCIALIZATION OF EV LION OZUMBA 551

Modes of collaboration

· Universities

· Government

· Private sectors (organizations and companies)

· Hybrid

Collaborations could come at any level on the road map described below to facilitate development.

Road Map

Level 1: UNN Campus Shuttle (Zik’s Flat to Engineering)

· Upgrading the Lead-acid battery to Lithium- ion for increased duration

· Strengthening mechanical links and joints for more stability

· Deploying for intra campus shuttle (Zik’s flat to Engineering)

· Continuous research and study on operational characteristics and parameters

Level 2 : Further development and Optimization for UNN shuttle up scaling to 5 or 10 units

· Optimization from research results

· Specialized study for local production of constitutive components with competitive economic and technological advantage

· Collaboration for manufacture of more units with optimized features and greater local content

Level 3: Up scaling and expansion of transport scheme to other universities, estates, large hospitals and hotels, airports and intra-cities

· Through collaboration with corresponding government and private sectors.

· Increased research and alignment to engineering and safety requirements.

Level 4: MOU with international organizations, China or indigenous companies for mass production

These are initiated:

  • For mass production through CKD component importation of constituting components with comparative foreign manufacture advantage
  • Technical know-how dissemination
  • Development for foreign - local synergetic manufacture
  • Collaboration for upscale of factors of production

Government policy intervention:

The initiation of the new technology into the socio-economic context of Nigeria would require government support and initiatives for rapid penetration into the market. Therefore in the ethos of sustainable development, the team would seek favorable governmental policies as they are expedient both for its development and also to keep Nigeria in line with policies on global warming and green house gas emission. Other

facilitating organizations would also aid in establishing coherent policies.

Expected policies and support s include but not limited to:

1. National budget for infrastructural development for electric transportation, including charging stations, renewable energy facilities and parks for electric vehicles

2. Policies that encourage electric mobility patronage like subsidy on electric usage for charging, tariff on internal combustion engine importation, favorable policy for indigenous electric vehicle production.

3. Funding for research and development, sponsorship and links for technical know-how from foreign expertise.

Vision The focus of this research group is to identify and harness brilliant and technological innovation potentials and the mechatronics philosophy in developing products and processes with maximum possible local content for advancing global economy with particular focus to Ni...

About the EV Team

INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) PROJECT TEAM   The Electric Vehicle sub-team of the Mechatronics Research Group, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) was formed in February, 2019 in response to a challenge posed to three Nigerian Universities towards local development, manufacture and commercialization of low cost, environmentally friendly and sustainable electric vehicles for campus shuttle and electric tractor for mechanization of small holder farmers, by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Abuja. In UNN, the then Vice Chancellor, Prof. Benjamin C. Ozumba was quick to respond to the challenge by empowering the Mechatronics Research Group to immediately embark on producing an electric car for campus shuttle within six weeks to prove the potentials of UNN in that regards. The team successfully completed the production of the five-seater electric vehicle within the set time period which was officially unveiled in the presence of the UNN admin...
